If your makeup looks great when you leave the house but starts separating, becoming shiny or disappearing a few hours later, Singapore's heat and humidity probably aren't helping.
One of the most common things we work on during our personal makeup classes in Singapore is not simply how to apply makeup beautifully, but how to make it last in our climate.
And making your makeup more sweat-proof doesn't necessarily mean applying more makeup.
In fact, sometimes using too much product is part of the problem.
The key is understanding your skin, choosing suitable products and learning how to layer them correctly.
Here are some of the techniques we teach our students at Bloom by Roseanne.
1. Start With the Right Skin Preparation
Long-lasting makeup starts before foundation.
If your skincare leaves a very heavy or slippery layer on the skin, everything you apply on top has a less stable base to adhere to.
At the same time, skipping skin preparation altogether isn't necessarily the answer. If your skin is dehydrated, your makeup may become patchy or sit unevenly.
The goal is to prepare your particular skin type appropriately.
Someone with oily skin may need a very different routine from someone whose skin is dry or dehydrated.
Give your skincare time to settle before beginning your makeup, and pay attention to how your skin actually behaves throughout the day rather than assuming that everyone needs the same preparation.
2. More Foundation Doesn't Mean Longer-Lasting Foundation
When we want makeup to last, it's tempting to apply more of it.
But a thick layer of foundation has more opportunity to move, crease and separate — particularly when you're dealing with heat, humidity and perspiration.
We generally prefer to build your base in thin, controlled layers.
Start with less product than you think you need.
Blend it properly into the skin.
Then add coverage only where you actually need it.
This can give you a much more natural finish while also making your base easier to maintain throughout the day.
During our One-to-One Makeup Lesson, your base routine can be customised according to your skin type, tone and lifestyle rather than simply following a standard foundation technique.
3. Don't Treat Every Part of Your Face the Same Way
Your entire face doesn't necessarily need the same amount of product.
You may become particularly oily around your nose and forehead while your cheeks remain relatively dry.
Your under-eye area may crease easily while the rest of your base stays perfectly intact.
This is why learning makeup is about more than memorising a sequence of steps.
You need to understand what your own face is doing.
You may need more setting in certain areas and considerably less in others.
This is one of the benefits of taking a 1-to-1 personal makeup class: instead of being told that everyone should use the same amount of powder in the same places, your technique can be adapted to your own skin.
4. Learn How to Set Your Makeup Properly
Powder can be extremely useful for making makeup last in Singapore, but simply applying a large amount of powder isn't necessarily going to make your makeup sweat-proof.
Where you place it and how you apply it matter.
Some areas may need to be set more thoroughly, particularly where your makeup tends to move or become oily.
Other areas may look better with very little powder.
Using too much can leave your makeup looking heavy or dry, while using too little in the areas that need it can allow your base to break down more quickly.
Learning the right balance for your own skin can make a significant difference.
5. Think About Your Makeup in Layers
Long-lasting makeup isn't usually the result of one miracle product.
It's the combination of multiple layers working well together.
Your skincare, primer if you use one, base, concealer, powder and setting products all need to work as a system.
The same principle applies to colour products.
Depending on your skin and the finish you want, layering compatible products strategically can sometimes give you better longevity than relying on one heavy application.
But again, more isn't automatically better.
The goal is to create thin layers that work together rather than piling product onto your skin.
6. Your Eye Makeup Needs Preparation Too
It's not only foundation that struggles with Singapore's humidity.
If you find that your eyeshadow creases or your eyeliner and mascara transfer during the day, your eye area may need its own preparation and setting technique.
This can be particularly noticeable if you have oilier eyelids or certain eye shapes.
Choosing appropriate textures and learning where and how to apply them can make a considerable difference to how your eye makeup wears throughout the day.
7. Choose Products for Your Lifestyle — Not Just Because They're Trending
A product can be excellent and still be completely wrong for you.
Someone who spends most of the day in an air-conditioned office has different requirements from someone who regularly works outdoors.
Someone who wants a five-minute morning routine has different needs from someone who enjoys spending 30 minutes doing her makeup.
And a foundation that looks beautiful on one person's skin may behave completely differently on another.
That's why we encourage our students to think about skin type, lifestyle, application technique and personal preference when choosing makeup.
At Bloom, we use products that are readily available from retailers such as Sephora, Watsons and Guardian in Singapore, so the recommendations you receive during your lesson are products you can realistically find and continue using yourself.
8. Don't Expect Makeup to Behave Like Skin
Even very long-lasting makeup is still makeup.
If you're perspiring heavily in Singapore's heat, the goal isn't necessarily to create something completely indestructible.
Instead, we want makeup that wears well, is less likely to separate unnecessarily and can be touched up without becoming heavy or patchy.
If you are sweating, avoid aggressively rubbing your face.
Learning how to blot, touch up and manage your makeup during the day can be just as important as the original application.
So, What Actually Makes Makeup Sweat-Proof?
There isn't one product or trick that makes everyone's makeup sweat-proof.
The answer is usually a combination of:
-
Appropriate skin preparation
-
The right base products for your skin
-
Thin layers rather than excessive product
-
Strategic powder placement
-
Proper setting techniques
-
Suitable eye makeup preparation
-
Products that match your lifestyle
-
Knowing how to touch up your makeup during the day
And most importantly, these things need to be adapted to you.
That's why copying somebody else's routine from a tutorial doesn't always produce the same result on your own face.
Want to Learn How to Make Your Own Makeup Last?
If you've tried following tutorials but still aren't sure why your makeup doesn't last, you don't necessarily need another product.
You may simply need to understand how to apply the products you already have differently.
Our One-to-One Makeup Lesson is a three-hour private makeup lesson in Singapore where your routine is customised according to your skin, features, style and lifestyle.
We can work through your base, contouring, eyeshadow, brows, lashes and other areas relevant to you, while helping you understand the products and techniques that make sense for your own skin.
You can also bring the makeup you already own so we can look at what you're currently using and help you get more from your existing collection.
