Makeup for Work: How to Get Ready in Just 5–10 Minutes

Between getting ready in the morning, commuting and getting to work on time, most of us in Singapore don't want to spend 30 minutes doing our makeup before leaving the house.

Add Singapore's heat and humidity into the mix, and an elaborate makeup routine isn't always practical either.

The good news is that makeup for work doesn't need to take a long time. Once you know which products and techniques work for you, it's possible to create a fresh, polished and work-appropriate makeup look in just 5–10 minutes.

Here are some of our favourite ways to make your morning makeup routine quicker.

1. Have One Makeup Routine Just for Work

One of the easiest ways to save time is to stop deciding what makeup to do every morning.

Create one reliable makeup-for-work routine and repeat it.

Keep the products you regularly use together so you're not searching through drawers for a particular concealer or lipstick at 7am.

Your routine could be as simple as:

Base → Concealer → Powder → Brows → Blush → Eyes → Mascara → Lips

The more often you repeat the same routine, the faster you'll naturally become.

2. Keep Your Base Light — Especially in Singapore

Singapore's warm, humid weather can make a heavy base uncomfortable throughout a long workday.

Instead of trying to create perfectly full-coverage skin every morning, use a lightweight base to even out your complexion.

Then apply concealer only where you actually need additional coverage — perhaps under the eyes, around redness, pigmentation or over individual blemishes.

Lightly set areas that become oily with powder.

This is faster in the morning and can also feel much more comfortable when you're commuting in Singapore's heat before stepping into an air-conditioned office.

3. Use Products That Can Do Two Jobs

You don't necessarily need a separate product for every step.

Your cream blush might double as a lip colour.

A neutral bronzer or contour shade may also work as your everyday eyeshadow.

A tinted sunscreen or lightweight complexion product may combine several steps of your morning routine.

Look through your makeup bag and identify the products that can perform more than one job.

Fewer products = fewer steps.

4. Simplify Your Work Eyeshadow

You don't need an elaborate eyeshadow look for everyday makeup for work.

Choose one neutral shade that suits your skin tone and blend it across your eyelid and slightly into the crease.

You could even use your bronzer or contour shade.

Curl your lashes, add mascara and you're done.

If creating perfectly even winged eyeliner normally takes you ten minutes by itself, consider leaving it out of your weekday routine or using a soft pencil close to the lash line instead.

Save the more complicated eye makeup for days when you actually have the time.

5. Don't Try to Perfect Your Brows Every Morning

For a quick work makeup routine, concentrate on making your brows look tidy rather than completely redrawing them.

Fill in sparse areas, lightly define the shape and brush through the hairs.

If you naturally have fuller brows, you may only need brow gel.

Remember that your everyday office makeup doesn't need to look like photoshoot makeup.

6. Choose an Easy Work Lip Colour

Choose a lip product that you can apply quickly and comfortably reapply throughout the day.

A tinted balm, lip tint or easy nude, pink or rose lipstick can be much more practical for work than a complicated combination of lip liner, lipstick and gloss.

You could even keep your everyday lip colour permanently in your work bag.

That's one less product to remember in the morning!

7. Keep Your Everyday Makeup Products Together

This sounds simple, but it can save a surprising amount of time.

Create a small work makeup bag containing only the products you need for your everyday routine.

Instead of opening several drawers and deciding between five blushes and six eyeshadow palettes every morning, everything you need is already together.

You can keep the rest of your makeup collection for weekends, dinners and special occasions.

8. Practise Doing Your Makeup in 10 Minutes

Set a timer.

Give yourself 10 minutes and complete your usual makeup for work.

You'll quickly discover which steps are taking most of your time.

Then ask yourself:

Does this step actually make enough difference to my everyday look?

If it doesn't, simplify it or remove it.

Once you're comfortable completing your routine in 10 minutes, try eight.

Eventually, you may find that you can complete your entire everyday face in around five minutes without feeling rushed.

What If I Only Have 5 Minutes?

If you're running late, prioritise the steps that make the biggest difference to your face rather than trying to squeeze a 20-minute routine into five minutes.

For example:

Minute 1: Lightweight base or concealer
Minute 2: Brows
Minute 3: Blush
Minute 4: Curl lashes + mascara
Minute 5: Lips + final check

Your own five-minute routine may look completely different — and that's okay.

The point is to know your priorities.

The Real Secret to Faster Makeup? Knowing What Works for You

Buying faster products isn't necessarily going to make you faster at makeup.

Knowing exactly what to do will.

If you're still experimenting with foundation shades, wondering where your blush should sit or trying several different eyeshadow techniques every morning, getting ready naturally takes longer.

Once you have a routine designed around your own features, products and lifestyle, you don't have to think about every step.

That's something we focus on during our One-to-One Makeup Lesson in Singapore.

Bring along the makeup you already own and we can help you understand what works, what you actually need and how to create a routine that suits your face and lifestyle. Our studio is at 450 North Bridge Road, opposite Bugis Junction, making the lesson accessible from central Singapore.

And if your goal is specifically:

“I want to learn how to do my makeup for work in 5–10 minutes.”

Tell us.

Your lesson can be tailored around creating a routine that is realistic for your mornings rather than teaching you an elaborate look you'll never have time to recreate.

Learn Work-Appropriate Makeup in Singapore

If you'd prefer to learn together with a friend, our Signature Makeup Workshop also allows you to choose a work-appropriate makeup look.

The two-hour workshop includes a live demonstration followed by your own practical time, so you don't simply watch how the makeup is done — you practise doing it yourself with guidance.

Or, if you're looking for more extensive personal makeup training, you can browse all of our makeup classes in Singapore, including our One-to-One Lesson, Signature Workshop and Ultimate Makeup Course.

Ultimately, makeup for work should make your mornings easier, not more stressful.

Find a routine that suits your face, your workplace and the amount of time you realistically have — and practise it until you barely have to think about it.
